Development of a sensitive DNA-based rapid test for the diagnostics of COVID-19

Development of new technologies for the diagnostics of COVID-19 and other viral infections have rapidly gained interest due to the present SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Until now, the most reliable test remains the RT-PCR, which requires access to the genome of the virus and therefore, specialized Personnel, Material and time.

In the project Travel-Dx we are developing a Lateral-flow based SARS-CoV-2 detection assay, which combines the simplicity of teststrips with the isothermal nucleic acid amplification method LAMP (Loop-mediated isothermal amplification). This setup allows for the sensitive and specific detection of viral DNA in less than 20 minutes and could be used for home testing. In order to increase the precision of the test, Smartphone-based quantification of the viral load in the sample is being developed.
